A lot of people have old books sitting on shelves and wonder if they're worth anything. The honest answer: it depends. Age alone doesn't determine value. A common 1920s book club edition might be worth a dollar, while a specific 1960s science fiction first printing could be worth hundreds.

That's why we evaluate — not guess. Years of buying and selling thousands of titles means we know what books are actually worth.

What Makes Old Books Valuable

• First editions and early printings — the earliest version of a title is almost always the most valuable
• Dust jackets on old hardcovers — a pre-1960 hardcover with its original dust jacket can be worth 10x more than without
• Signed or inscribed copies — author signatures dramatically increase value
• Regional and local interest — New Mexico history, Native American art, Southwest exploration
• Illustrated editions — hand-colored plates, woodcuts, fine press printing
• Leather and fine bindings — especially pre-1900

What's Usually NOT Valuable

Some categories of old books rarely have resale value. We'll still take them — anything we don't buy gets donated to the New Mexico Literacy Project — but here's what to expect:

• Book club editions — mass-produced, low collectible value regardless of age
• Ex-library copies — stamps, stickers, and spine labels reduce value significantly
• Reader's Digest condensed books — abundant supply, almost no demand
• Encyclopedias — sets from Britannica, World Book, etc. have very little market value (we wrote a guide on this)
• Severely damaged books — water damage, mold, missing pages
